Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Priest For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages.

Amen. Lord, have mercy. (12)

Imperial Psalms

Psalm 19

The Priest censes with the Katzion.

The Lord hear you in the day of affliction; the name of the God of Jacob defend you.

Let Him send forth help to you from His sanctuary, and let Him help you out of Sion.

Let Him remember every sacrifice of yours, and let Him fatten your whole-burnt offering.

The Lord grant you according to your heart, and fulfill your purposes.

We will rejoice in Your salvation, and we shall be magnified in the name of the Lord our God.

The Lord fulfill all your requests.

Now I have known that the Lord has saved His anointed one: He will hear him out of His holy heaven; the salvation of His right hand is in mighty deeds.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will call on the name of the Lord our God.

They have been fettered and have fallen, but we are risen and are set upright.

Lord, save the king, and hear us in the day when we call on You.

Psalm 20

O Lord, the king shall be glad in Your strength, and he shall rejoice exceedingly in Your salvation.

You have granted him the desire of his heart, and have not denied him the requests of his lips.

You went before him with the blessings of goodness, You have set upon his head a crown of precious stone.

He asked life of You, and You gave him length of days to ages of ages.

Great is his glory in Your salvation; You shall lay glory and majesty on him.

For You shall give him blessing to ages of ages, You shall gladden him in joy with Your countenance.

For the king hopes in the Lord, and through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be shaken.

Let Your hand be found on all Your enemies; let Your right hand find all that hate You.

For You will make them as an oven of fire in the time of Your presence; the Lord in His wrath will sorely trouble them and fire shall devour them.

You will destroy their fruit from the earth, and their seed from the sons of men, for they have intended evil against You, they have devised counsels which they shall not be able to establish.

For You shall make them turn their backs; You shall make ready their countenance among those who are Your remnant.

Be exalted, Lord, in Your strength; we will sing and chant of Your mighty acts.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Hexapsalm

Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will to men.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will to men.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will to men.

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.

O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.

Psalm 3

O Lord, why are those who afflict me multiplied?

Many rise up against me. Many say to my soul: there is no salvation for him in his God.

But You, O Lord, are my Helper, my Glory, and the One who lifts up my head.

I cried to the Lord with my voice, and He heard me out of His holy mountain.

I laid down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord will help me.

I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people that set themselves round about against me.

Rise, O Lord; save me, my God; for You have struck down all who without cause are my enemies; You have broken the teeth of sinners.

Salvation is of the Lord, and Your blessing is on Your people.

(And Again) I laid down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord will help me.

Psalm 37

O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger, nor chasten me in Your wrath!

For Your arrows are fastened in me, and You have laid Your hand heavily upon me

There is no healing in my flesh in the face of Your wrath; and there is no peace in my bones in the face of my sins.

For my iniquities have risen higher than my head; they have pressed heavily on me as a heavy burden.

My wounds have become foul and festering in the face of my foolishness.

I have been wretched and utterly bowed down until the end; I went all the day long with downcast face.

For my loins are filled with inflammation, and there is no healing in my flesh.

I am afflicted and exceedingly humbled, I have groaned from the turmoil of my heart.

O Lord, all my desire is before You, and my groaning is not hidden from You.

My heart is troubled, my strength has failed me; and the light of my eyes, even this is not with me.

My friends and my neighbors drew near over against me and stood, and my nearest of kin stood afar off.

And those who sought after my soul used violence; and those who sought evils for me spoke vain things, and they meditated deception all the day long.

But as for me, like a deaf man I did not hear them, and I was as a speechless man who does not open his mouth.

And I became as a man that does not hear, and that has no reproofs in his mouth.

For I have hoped in You, O Lord; You will hear me, Lord my God.

For I said: Let my enemies never rejoice over me; indeed, when my feet were shaken, those men spoke boastful words against me.

For I am ready for scourges, and my sorrow is continually before me.

For I will declare my iniquity, and I will anguish concerning my sin.

But my enemies live and are made stronger than I, and those who hated me unjustly are multiplied.

Those who render me evil for good slandered me, because I pursued goodness.

Do not forsake me, O Lord my God, do not depart from me.

Be attentive to my help, O Lord of my salvation.

(And Again) Do not forsake me, O Lord my God, do not depart from me.

Be attentive to my help, O Lord of my salvation.

Psalm 62

O God, my God, to You I rise early at dawn.

My soul has thirsted for You; how often has my flesh longed after You in a land barren and untrodden and unwatered.

So I have appeared before You in the sanctuary to see Your power and Your glory.

For Your mercy is better than lives; my lips shall praise You.

So shall I bless You in my life, and I will lift up my hands in Your name.

Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with lips of rejoicing.

If I remembered You on my bed, I meditated on You at the dawn.

For You have become my Helper; I will rejoice in the shelter of Your wings.

My soul has cleaved after You, Your right hand has been quick to help me.

But as for those who in vain have sought after my soul, they shall go into the lowest parts of the earth, they shall be surrendered to the edge of the sword, they shall be portions for foxes.

But the king shall be glad in God; everyone shall be praised that swears by Him; for the mouth of those who speak unjust things is stopped.

(And Again) At the dawn I meditated on You; For You have become my Helper; in the shelter of Your wings I will rejoice.

My soul has cleaved after You, Your right hand has been quick to help me.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God.

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Psalm 87

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

O Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried by day and by night before You.

Let my prayer come before You, bow down Your ear to my supplication.

For my soul is filled with evils, and my life has drawn near to Hades.

I am counted with those who go down into the pit; I have become as a man without help, free among the dead.

I am like the bodies of the slain that sleep in the grave, Whom You remember no more, and who are cut off from Your hand.

They laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness and the shadow of death.

Your anger lies heavily on me, and You have afflicted me with all Your waves.

You have removed my friends far from me; they have made me an abomination to themselves.

I have been delivered up, and have not come forth; my eyes have grown weak from poverty.

I have cried to You, O Lord, the whole day long; I have stretched out my hands to You.

No, will You work wonders for the dead? Or shall physicians raise them up that they may give thanks to You?

Μὴ τοῖς νεκροῖς ποιήσεις θαυμάσια ἢ ἰατροὶ ἀναστήσουσι καὶ ἐξομολογήσονταί σοι;

No, shall any in the grave tell of Your mercy, and of Your truth in that destruction?

Μὴ διηγήσεταί τις ἐν τῷ τάφῳ τὸ ἔλεός σου καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειάν σου ἐν τῇ ἀπωλείᾳ;

No, shall Your wonders be known in that darkness, and Your righteousness in that land that is forgotten?

Μὴ γνωσθήσεται ἐν τῷ σκότει τὰ θαυμάσιά σου καὶ ἡ δικαιοσύνη σου ἐν γῇ ἐπιλελησμένῃ;

But as for me, I have cried to You, O Lord; and in the morning my prayer shall come before You.

O Lord, why do You therefore cast off my soul and turn Your face away from me?

Ἵνα τὶ Κύριε ἀπωθεῖς τὴν ψυχήν μου, ἀποστρέφεις τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ;

I am as a poor man, and in troubles from my youth; indeed, having been exalted, I was humbled and brought to distress.

Your fierce wrath has gone over me, and Your terrors have sorely troubled me.

They came around me all day long like water, they engulfed me altogether.

Because of my misery You have removed friend and neighbor and my acquaintances far from me.

(And Again) O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried by day and by night before You.

Let my prayer come before You, bow down Your ear to my supplication!

Psalm 102

Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all that He has done for you.

Who is gracious to all your iniquities, Who heals all your infirmities.

Who redeems your life from corruption, Who crowns you with mercy and compassion.

Who fulfills your desire with good things; your youth shall be renewed as the eagle’s.

The Lord does deeds of mercy, and executes judgment for all those who are wronged.

He has made His ways known to Moses, the things that He has willed to the sons of Israel.

The Lord is compassionate and merciful, long suffering and plenteous in mercy; He will not be angered to the end, neither will He be angry to eternity.

He has not dealt with us according to our iniquities, neither has He rewarded us according to our sins.

For according to the height of heaven from the earth, so has the Lord made His mercy to prevail over those who fear Him.

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our iniquities from us.

Like a father has compassion on his sons, so has the Lord had compassion on those who fear Him; for He knows of what we are made, He has remembered that we are dust.

As for man, his days are as the grass; as a flower of the field, so shall he blossom forth.

For when the wind passes over it, then it shall be gone, and its place will no longer remember it.

But the mercy of the Lord is from eternity, even to eternity, on those who fear Him.

And His righteousness is on sons of sons, on those who keep His testament and remember to do His commandments.

The Lord in heaven has prepared His throne, and His kingdom rules over all.

Bless the Lord, O all you His Angels, mighty in strength, that perform His word, to hear the voice of His words.

Bless the Lord, O all you His hosts, His ministers that do His will.

Bless the Lord, O all you His works, in every place of His dominion; bless the Lord, my soul.

(And Again) Bless the Lord, O all you His works, in every place of His dominion; bless the Lord, my soul.

Psalm 142

O Lord, hear my prayer, in Your truth give ear to my supplications; hear me in Your righteousness.

And do not enter into judgment with Your servant, for in Your sight no man living shall be justified.

For the enemy has persecuted my soul; he has humbled my life down to the earth.

He has sat me in darkness as those who have been long dead, and my spirit within me has become despondent; my heart within me is troubled.

I remembered days of old, I meditated on all Your works, I pondered on the creations of Your hands.

I stretched forth my hands to You; my soul thirsts after You like a waterless land.

Quickly hear me, O Lord; my spirit has fainted away.

Do not turn Your face from me, lest I be like those who go down into the pit.

Cause me to hear Your mercy in the morning; for I have put my hope in You.

Cause me to know, O Lord, the way in which I should walk; for I have lifted up my soul to You.

Rescue me from my enemies, O Lord; I have fled to You for refuge.

Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.

Your good Spirit shall lead me in the land of uprightness; You shall quicken me for Your name’s sake, O Lord.

In Your righteousness You shall bring my soul out of affliction, and in Your mercy You shall utterly destroy my enemies.

And You shall cut off all those who afflict my soul, for I am Your servant.

(Repeat) Hear me in Your righteousness, O Lord, and do not enter into judgment with Your servant.

(And Again) Hear me in Your righteousness, O Lord, and do not enter into judgment with Your servant.

(And Again) Let Your good spirit lead me on a level path!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

From Pilate, Joseph asked, • for Your most sacred body. • He wrapped it in a clean • linen shroud and with spices • anointed it for burial and he laid it in his new tomb. • Then at early dawn, the women came with their ointments, • and they cried, “Show us • the Resurrection, O Savior, • as You had foretold, O Christ.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Astounded were the hosts • of the Angels, beholding, • how He who sits above • in the bosom of His Father, • is laid in a sepulcher, • the Immortal One, as a corpse. • He is surrounded by • angelic armies, who praise Him • and, together with the dead in Hades, give glory • to Him, their Creator and Lord.

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your compassions blot out my transgression.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my iniquity, and my sin is ever before me.

Against You only have I sinned, and I have done evil in Your sight, that You may be justified in Your words, and be victorious when You are judged.

For behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.

For behold, You have loved the truth; the hidden and secret things of Your wisdom You have made manifest to me.

Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.

Make me to hear joy and gladness; the bones that are humbled shall rejoice.

Turn Your face away from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and establish me with Your governing Spirit.

I shall teach transgressors Your ways, and the impious shall turn back to You.

Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God, the God of my salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in Your righteousness.

O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Your praise.

For if You had desired sacrifice, I would have given it; with whole-burnt offerings You shall not be pleased.

A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; a heart that is broken and humbled God will not reject.

Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Sion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built.

Then You shall be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with oblation and whole-burnt offerings.

Then they shall offer young bulls upon Your altar.

He Who sustains all things is raised upon the Cross, and all creation mourns, seeing Him hanging naked on the Wood. The sun hides its rays, and the stars cast off their gleam; the earth quakes with great fright, and the sea retreats; the rocks are split asunder; many graves are opened, and the bodies of holy men arise. Hades groans below, and the Judeans plan to spread false rumors against the Resurrection of Christ, while the women cry out: “Behold, this the most-blessed Sabbath, in which Christ having fallen asleep, will rise on the third day.”

Of the Day from the Menaion, and the commemoration from the Triodion:

On the Holy and Great Saturday, we celebrate the burial of the divine Body, of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, and His descent into Hades, through which our race was recalled from corruption, and was transplanted to eternal life.

Verses of the Burial of the Divine Body

In vain you watchmen guard the tomb;

No grave can contain the Source of life.

In Your ineffable condescension, O Christ God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to You, O God, glory to You.

Hades was wounded, pierced in the heart, when it did receive Him whose side was pierced by a spear; and consumed by divine fire, it did groan aloud, for the salvation of us who sing in melody: “Our Deliverer, blessed are You, O God.”

Glory to You, O God, glory to You.

The tomb is happy, having become divine when it received within itself the Treasury of Life, the Creator as one who is sleeping, for the salvation of us who sing in melody: “Our Deliverer, blessed are You, O God.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The Life of all things was willing to lie in a grave in accordance with the law of the dead, and shows it to be the fountain of awaking, for the salvation of us who sing in melody: “Our Deliverer, blessed are You, O God.”

Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

The Godhead of Christ was united indivisibly in Hades and the tomb, and in Eden with the Father and the Spirit, for the salvation of us who sing in melody: “Our Deliverer, blessed are You, O God.”

Glory to You, O God, glory to You.

The most pure Temple has been destroyed, but He raises with Himself the fallen tabernacle, for the second Adam, He who dwells on high, has descended to the first Adam in the depths of hell. “O you youths shall bless Him; O you priests shall praise Him; you people shall exalt Him unto all the ages.”

We bless the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the Lord.

The courage of the disciples failed, but Joseph of Arimathea has shown much valor; for beholding the God of all, a corpse and naked, he asked for Him and buried him, crying: “O you youths shall bless Him; O you priests shall praise Him; you people shall exalt Him unto all the ages.”

Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Oh; what wonders most strange and new! Oh; what endless goodness! Oh; what endurance beyond words! For He who dwells on high is sealed up underneath the earth by His own free will. And God is slandered as though a deceiver. “O you youths shall bless Him; O you priests shall praise Him; you people shall exalt Him unto all the ages.”

Glory to You, O God, glory to You.

O Son without beginning, I escaped suffering at Your strange Birth, and I was supernaturally blessed. But now beholding You, my God, a corpse and without breath, I am pierced with the spear of a bitter sorrow. But arise that I may be magnified by You.

The earth, O my Mother, covers Me by My own will. And the gate-keepers of Hades trembled at beholding Me enrobed in the blood splattered garment of vengeance, for by being God, I struck down my adversaries with the Cross, and I will rise again that I may magnify you.

Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Let all creation rejoice, and all those born on earth be glad, for Hades and the enemy are despoiled. Let the women come and meet Me with their myrrh, for I deliver Adam and Eve and their descendents; and on the third day, I shall arise again.

O Christ the Life, • You were laid in a tomb; • and the multitude of angels were bewildered, • as they glorified Your condescension.

How, O Life, can You die? • How can You dwell in a tomb? • Not withstanding this, You break apart the realm of death • and You raise up those in Hades who are dead.

You do we magnify, • O Lord Jesus, our King; • and we honor Your entombment and Your suffering • whereby You have saved us from corruption.

O Jesus, King of all, • who set bound-ries to the earth, • You go on this day to dwell within a narrow tomb, • thereby raising up the dead from their graves.

O Jesus, my Christ, • and the King of all mankind, • why have you come seeking those in Hades who are dead? • Is it to release the race of mortal men?

Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ μου, Βασιλεῦ τοῦ παντός, τί ζητῶν τοῖς ἐν τῷ ᾍδη ἐλήλυθας; ἢ τὸ γένος ἀπολῦσαι τῶν βροτῶν;

Lo, the Master of all • openly is seen as dead, • and then He is buried, lying in a brand new tomb, • He who empties out the graves of all their dead.

O Christ the Life, • You were laid in a tomb; • and by means of Your own death You abolished death, • and You showered on the earth eternal life.

With those who are criminals, • You were numbered, O Christ, • and by this we were all rescued from the evil crimes • brought on by the ancient schemer’s evil deeds.

O my sweet Jesus, • my Salvation, my Light: • How is it that You are hidden in a darkened tomb? • This untold forebearance is beyond all words!

Both the Angelic Hosts, and Nature’s intellect • are unable to perceive the mystery, O Christ, • of Your burial past utterance and speech.

Oh, how strange this wonder! • Oh, what new happening! • For the One who gave me breath is brought without breath • and is buried by the hands of Joseph.

When, O Christ our Maker, • You were laid in Your tomb, • the foundation rock of Hades quaked with shuddering, • and the graves of mortal men were opened wide.

Tears of lamentation • did the spotless Virgin shed, • over You, O Jesus, and then with a mother’s grief, • she cried out: “How can I bury You, my Son?”

Δακρυρρόους θρήνους, ἐπὶ σὲ ἡ Ἁγνή, μητρικῶς ὦ Ἰησοῦ ἐπιρραίνουσα, ἀνεβόα· Πῶς κηδεύσω σε Υἱὲ;

All the earth trembles and • shakes with dread fear, O word, • and the morning star does hide its brilliant radiance, • since the earth hides You, the greatest of all Light.

Like the disappearing sun, • You were hidden by the earth, • You were covered like the sun by the night of death, • but, O Savior, shine in even brighter dawn.

O Christ the Life, • having also tasted death, • from Your death You granted freedom to those who are dead, • and You have now given life to all mankind.

When the ranks of Angels • saw You dead for our sake, • O my Savior, they were filled with great amazement, • and they covered up their faces with their wings.

Being raised on the Tree, • You raise with You those that live, • and then when You did descend underneath the earth, • You did raise all those who had been buried there.

Full of fear and rev’rence, • noble Joseph lays You down • for entombment, O my Savior, as One who is dead, • and he looks with wonder on Your dreadful form.

Worshipping Your Passion, • I sing of Your burial, • and I magnify Your power, Lover of mankind; • by which of the passions I have been set free.

One of the Trinity, • having taken on flesh, • for our sake did tolerate a wrong and shameful death, • and the sun did shudder and the earth did quake.

Standing as one who’s judged, • facing Pilate’s judgment seat • lo, the One who is the Judge wrongly is condemned • to unrightful death upon the Cross of Wood.

O you jealous, murderous, • and malicious people, • by the graveclothes and the napkin may you be ashamed, • having seen the Resurrection of the Christ.

If you are the friend of poor, • and lament the use of myrrh, • that was emptied out for the forgiveness of a soul, • how can you betray the Source of Light for gold?

O my God and my Word, • O my Pleasure and Joy, • how am I to tolerate Your three days in the tomb? • Now my heart is ruptured by a mother’s grief.

“When shall I, O Savior, • see You, the eternal Light, • the exuberance and utter gladness of my heart?” • cried the Virgin in her bitterness and grief.

As from a single fount • does a double river flow • from Your side, and then when we take a drink from it, • we enjoy the fruit of everlasting life.

By Your will You were seen • dead, O Word, in the tomb, • yet You are alive, my Savior, and as You foretold, • You shall by Your Resurrection raise the dead.

“Who will give me water, • and a fountain spring of tears?” • This, the Virgin Bride of God cried, exclaiming thus: • “that for my sweet Jesus I may weep and mourn.”

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Savior, when above, • You are undivided with the Father, • yet, the Seraphim saw You lying dead, • covered by the earth, and they were struck with fear.

Lo, the temple’s veil • was torn at Your Crucifixion, O Word, • and the lights of Heaven hid their radiance, • when You hid Yourself, O Sun, beneath the earth.

He, who with a nod • did create the earth in the beginning, • hides beneath the earth, breathless as the dead; • there-fore, be in fear, O Heaven, at this sight.

Being buried, Christ, • You destroyed the palaces of Hades. • Therefore, by Your death You put death to death, • and mankind was rescued from corruption.

The Wisdom of God • spilling forth the gushing rivers of life, • hides within the tomb. By descending there, • He gives life to all those in the depths of hell.

“That I may renew • the destroyed existence of all mankind, • willingly in flesh I do take on death; • therefore, Mother, do not mourn or grieve for Me.”

Joseph sings a hymn • at the burial with Nicodemos, • singing unto Christ, who was put to death; • and with them in song are joined the Seraphim.

Sun of Righteousness, • You did hide be-neath the earth, O Savior, • and the Moon, Your Mother, was eclipsed with grief • and in sorrow at beholding You no more.

In receiving You • in her arms, O Savior and Creator, • thus the earth did shake utterly with fear, • and those who were dead awakened at her quake.

At Your suffering, • there was neither form nor beauty in You; • but You rose, O Word, and with Your Light divine, • You have given beauty unto all mankind.

“Woe is me, my Son,” • said lamenting, she who knew not wedlock • “I see You, condemned, now upon the Cross: • You, who I had hoped would be enthroned as King.”

With our hymns, O Christ, • and with all the faithful do we worship, • now, Your Crucifixion and Your Sepulcher; • by Your Burial are we set free from death.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

O God without source, • co-eternal with the Word and Spirit: • O One who is good, do confirm the Faith • of those who do rule against their enemies.

And again the first Troparion:

Truly it is right, • Life-bestowing Lord, to magnify You; • You who did extend Your hands outward on the Cross, • shattering the power of the enemy.

Ev’ry generation • offers hymns and praises • at Your entombment, my Christ.

The Arimathean, • took You down from the Wood, • and laid You down in a tomb.

Women bringing spices, • came with loving forethought, • providing myrrh, O my Christ.

Come, with all creation, • let us sing in parting • a hymn to the Creator.

With the myrrh-bearers, • let us all, with prudence, • anoint as dead Him, who lives.

Thrice-blessed Joseph, • lays away the Body • of Christ the Giver of life.

Those He fed with manna • lifted heels of spurning • against their Benefactor.

O, the insane folly, • of those that slew the prophets, • about their slaying of Christ.

Son of God, Almighty, • my God and my Creator, • how did You endure suff’ring?

Υἱὲ Θεοῦ παντάναξ, Θεέ μου πλαστουργέ μου, πῶς πάθος κατεδέξω;

The Mother Heifer cried out, • in mourning, seeing her Calf • suspended on the Wood Cross.

With her heart pierced through-out • the Maiden called out, crying, • with fervor, shedding warm tears.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments.

The assembly of the angels was amazed to behold You, being numbered with the dead. You, O Savior, have destroyed the power of death, and You did raise up Adam with Yourself, and delivered everyone from Hades.

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments.

“Why do you, O women disciples, mingle myrrh with tears of pity?” Thus the Angel who was dazzling in the tomb cried unto the myrrh-bearing women, “See for yourselves the sepulcher and rejoice; for the Savior has risen from the tomb.”

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments.

Early in the morn, the myrrh-bearing women hastened to Your sepulcher lamenting, but the angel drew near to them and said: “The time for lamenting has now come to an end; weep not, but announce to the Apostles the Resurrection.”

Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments.

The myrrh-bearing women, who came with ointment to Your sepulcher, O Savior, heard the voice of the angel clearly crying to them loudly: “Why do you number Him who lives among the dead? For as God, He has risen from the sepulcher.”

On this day the grave holds Him Who holds all creation in His palm. A stone covers Him, Who covered the heavens with virtue. And Life slumbers, and Hades trembles; and Adam is set free from his bonds. Glory to Your dispensation, through which You have accomplished all things, granting us an eternal Sabbath, Your most-holy Resurrection from the dead.

Joseph asked for the Body of Jesus, and he laid it into his own new tomb; for He had to emerge from the grave as from a bridal chamber. O You, who have broken the power of death, and who opened the gates of Paradise to men; glory be to You.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

The great Moses mystically foreshadowed this present day, by saying: “And God blessed the seventh day.” For this is the day of the blessed Sabbath; this is the day of rest, on which the only-begotten Son of God rested from all His works. Suffering death in accordance with the plan of salvation, He kept the Sabbath in the flesh, and returning again to what He was, through His Resurrection, He has now granted unto us everlasting life, for He alone is good and loves mankind.

Most blessed are you, O Virgin Theotokos, for through Him who took flesh from you, Hades was made captive, Adam was recalled from the dead, the curse made void, Eve set free, death was put to death and we were given life. Therefore, with hymns we cry aloud: “Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who has been so pleased, glory to You.”

Deacon Wisdom. Let us be attentive.

The hand of the Lord was upon me, and He brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley; it was full of bones. And He led me round among them; and behold, there were very many upon the valley; and lo, they were very dry. And He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, You know.” Again He said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.”

So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold, a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And as I looked, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.”

So I prophesied as He commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great host. Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are clean cut off.’

Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O My people; and I will bring you home into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O My people. And I will put My Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken, and I have done it, says the Lord.”

The reading from the First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians.

Deacon Wisdom. Let us be attentive.

Brethren: Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Paschal Lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us, therefore, celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us – for it is written, “Cursed be every one who hangs on a tree” – that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You.

The Priest reads the Gospel.

Next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ Therefore order the sepulcher to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away, and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can.” So they went and made the sepulcher secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.

Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You.
